Counselor Garners Honors

 - by Linden Hill

Linden Hill counselor, Nathan Palkovitz, was just as surprised as everyone else when he learned he was being honored as the “Exemplary School Coordinator Award” by Creative Mentoring (a Connecting Generations program).  Palkovitz learned that he was being nominated for the award and shortly after he was informed that he had won the award.

Palkovitz has served as Linden Hill’s counselor for seven years and has been involved with the mentoring program for just as long. “When I interviewed for the position, Dr. Bradley, explained that the mentoring program was part of the job requirements. I’ve been a part of it ever since.”

When asked how the program affects children, Palkovitz reflected that, “children receive the attention that they may need. Mentors spend time with the children and listen to them.” On average, mentors spend an hour a week with their students. “One hour can make a world of difference,” notes Palkovitz.

What troubles Palkovitz most about the program is the lack of available mentors. Creative Mentoring supplies many mentors, which Linden Hill then matches with children. In addition, some school and district employees volunteer to mentor a child. But there is still a need for more mentors. “Many potential mentors feel that they do not have the time to be a mentor,” comments Palkovitz. “They don’t realize that just a little time can make a big difference to a child.”

Mentors and students often spend time during lunch and recess reading, shooting hoops with a basketball, playing a game, building a craft or model, or simply talking.

To celebrate the award, Palkovitz was honored at dinner on the waterfront having the opportunity to meet Delaware Senator Carper. The evening was a moment to recognize the efforts of an outstanding teacher and mentor to all Linden Hill students.
