Essential Questions

What is urban sprawl? Why should we learn more about it? What are some things that we can do to help minimize urban sprawl? What is design? How does design interact with urban sprawl?

  1. Define Urban Sprawl.
  2. Understand the causes and problems associated with urban Sprawl.
  3. Begin building the Tracker
  4. Create a problem that other teams will need to solve.

The Standards

Lesson Standard:

3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.

Assessment Tool:

Dr. Bernal is observing to see how I work with my team. She wants to see that I listen and recognize the contributions of others. She wants me to try different ideas that I generate as well as my team. She wants to make sure that I am using my time effectively. I will receive a grade on the ideas I generate with my team to solve engineering and urban sprawl problems as well as my performance within my team.
